Create Competitions and Fixtures in NV Play Cricket

This page describes how to complete a variety of competition management tasks, particularly those around creating competitions and fixtures, in the NV Play Cricket for Windows software.

If you previously used web-admin, or you rely on NV Play to perform advanced setup tasks, you can now manage many of these activities independently and with greater efficiency, as described in the steps below.

This page includes the following topics:

The tasks described below are managed via Tools > Edit Database.

Creating New Entities

Entitles are the individual informational building blocks that make up a fixture or competition, such as clubs or organisations, teams, players, venues, and so on. These entities should be created before a fixture.

Each entity can be created by clicking the New button on the respective tab and entering the required information (mandatory fields are highlighted in red). Logged-in users can tick the Share on Server checkbox to upload new entities immediately when saving, ensuring they are stored both locally and on the server.

As of August 2023, the Share on Server checkbox for Organisations and Match Types attached to a user's Club/Organisation is inactive. These entities are saved locally and then uploaded when used in a Live Scored match. This behaviour is under review.

You can delete unused entities using the Delete (Local) button. If the entity is linked to another entity or a match, this option is disabled. In some cases, users with suitable permissions can use Delete (Server).

Recommended Management Process

Before creating a new competition and its fixtures, ensure the following required entities exist:

  • Organisations – Only needed when a new organisation is required; should be affiliated to the user's club or organisation.
  • Teams – Only required when adding a new team.
  • Players – Optional, as new players can be created during match setup.
  • Venues – Only needed for new venues.
  • Officials – Optional, as new officials can be created at match setup.
  • Match Types – Only needed for custom match types; default options (e.g., Twenty20, One Day, 4-Innings) are available.

Creating a New Competition

  1. Open Tools > Edit Database.
  2. Click the Competitions tab and click New.
  3. If the new competition is a continuation of a previous season's competition, select it from the dropdown list to auto-fill Competition Name, Competition Type, and Match Type.
  4. If not continuing from a previous season, manually enter the Competition Name (or modify it, e.g., for a new sponsor).
  5. Select the required Competition Type and Level.
  6. If the competition has multiple formats (e.g., One Day and Twenty20), use Parent and Child Competitions:
    • Create the Parent Competition without adding fixtures unless it includes playoffs.
    • Create Child Competitions (e.g., "Twenty20" or "Pool A") and select the Parent Competition from the dropdown list.
    • Tick Group by Parent Competition for all child competitions.
    • Assign fixtures to the appropriate child competitions.
  7. Set the Club/Organisation to your club or organisation.
  8. Enable the Points Table > Calculate checkbox to set up a points system if required (see Competition Management Glossary for details).

A points system is only useful if all matches in the competition are scored using NV Play Cricket for Windows or the NV Play Cricket mobile app.

Adding Fixtures to a Competition

  1. Click the Fixtures tab and click New.
  2. Enter all required details (marked with a red asterisk).
  3. Selecting a Club/Organisation filters the Team list.
  4. While assigning a competition is optional, it is recommended to ensure an organised Match Centre.
  5. The Share on Server checkbox activates when:
    • At least one selected team belongs to the user's club or organisation or an affiliated organisation.
    • The user has appropriate permissions.
  6. Saving a fixture with Share on Server ticked automatically publishes it on the relevant Match Centre (e.g., live.nvplay.com/play).

Verifying Competitions and Fixtures

After creating fixtures:

  • Select the new competition in Fixtures > Competition dropdown to review the list.
  • Check fixture details under File > Start Match from Fixture.
  • Adjust the Date Range if necessary to view future competitions.
  • Confirm that other users in the club or organisation can access the competitions and fixtures via File > Start Match from Fixture.

If errors are found, they can be corrected in Tools > Edit Database by selecting the entity, making any required changes, and saving.

Final Steps

Anyone with suitable permissions can access File > Start Match from Fixture to begin scoring. This method replaces previous web-admin and NV Play-managed competition and fixture setups.
