Competition Management Glossary of Terms

The glossary on this page defines the terms found under Tools > Edit Database. This guide is helpful for understanding the terminology used in competition and fixture creation.

These terms have been organised into the following categories:

Refer to this glossary alongside the Competition Management (Competition and Fixture Creation) in NV Play Cricket page before setting up new competitions and fixtures.

Mandatory fields in the software's user-interface are highlighted in red.

Navigating away from a new or edited entity without clicking Save will generate a warning prompt.

Glossary

Organisations

These are the entities (e.g., schools, clubs, districts, provinces) to which teams, venues, and players must be attached.

  • Name – Enter an appropriate name (e.g., "St Albans Cricket Club"). New users have their organisation created upon sign-up, so only 'opposition' organisations need to be added.
  • Type – Select from Club, School, National Body, District Association, Major Association, Cricket Board, or League (ignore International Governing Body and Competition Group).
  • Country – Select the country from the dropdown list.
  • Region – Specify the internal region (e.g., "Canterbury").
  • Affiliated To – Link a new 'opposition' organisation to your own if their teams will play in the same competitions.
  • External ID – This field is inactive and can be ignored.
  • Share on Server – Tick this to upload the organisation to the server immediately, otherwise, it will upload when first used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Removes the organisation from the system if required.

Teams

These represent individual teams within an organisation (e.g., club teams, school teams, district teams) that participate in competitions.

  • Club/Organisation – Select the relevant organisation from the dropdown list before creating teams.
  • Name in Club – Enter the team name without the organisation name (e.g., "Premier Men"). This name will:
    • Be automatically appended to the organisation's full name in the Full Name field.
    • Appear on its own in the Short Display Name field.
  • Full Name – The team name displayed on match lists within PCS and on the Match Centre/Portal. If too long, edit to remove unnecessary parts (e.g., "Cricket Club" to "CC").
    • Example: "St Albans Premier Men" (club + grade + gender).
  • Short Display Name – The name displayed in the Main Scoreboard Panel within NV Play Cricket and on replay screens/scoreboards.
    • Auto-created from Name in Club but can be shortened.
    • Best practice: Use only the Club/Organisation name to prevent confusion (e.g., "St Albans" instead of "Premier Men").
  • Abbreviated Name – A three-letter abbreviation for the team (e.g., "STA" for "St Albans"). Used in fixtures (e.g., "STA vs OBC").
  • Current Squad – Use Add/Remove buttons to manage the team’s squad, making match setup easier (especially for season openers).
  • External ID – This field is inactive and can be ignored.
  • Team Gender – Select the team’s gender from the dropdown list.
  • Team Colour – Click on Primary and Secondary colour squares to set team colours.
  • Twitter Name – Enter the team’s Twitter (X) handle.
  • Team Logo – Click Browse to upload a logo or Remove to replace it.
  • Share on Server – Tick this to immediately upload the team to the server; otherwise, it will upload when first used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Removes the team from the system if required.

Players

These are the individual players who compete for a specific team in a competition and must be linked to their home organisation.

  • Full Name – Enter the first, middle, and last names of the player. A preferred first name can also be added. Alternatively, only first and middle initials may be used.
  • Scorecard Name – Auto-populated in the format "AB Player" when the full name is entered but can be edited if necessary. This name appears in NV Play Cricket and Match Centres.
  • Short Display Name – Auto-populated from the full name. This is the name displayed on the Main Scoreboard panel within NV Play Cricket and on replay screens/scoreboards.
  • Gender – Select from the dropdown list.
  • Shirt Number – Enter the player's shirt number, if known (may change based on match format/competition).
  • Left-Handed Batter – Tick if applicable.
  • Bowling Type – Select from the dropdown list.
  • Keeper – Tick if the player is a wicketkeeper.
  • Visual Impairment – Select the appropriate level if relevant.
  • External ID – This field is inactive and can be ignored.
  • Retired? – Tick to remove retired players from available selection lists.
  • Club/Organisation – Select the player's home Club/Organisation.
  • Data Protection – Tick if the player permits the use of personal data (timestamped and saved on the server).
  • Date of Birth – Select via the calendar icon or enter manually (DD/MM/YYYY).
  • Email Address – Enter the player's email.
  • Mobile Number – Enter the player's mobile number.
  • Twitter Name – Enter the player's Twitter (X) handle.
  • Profile Image – Upload a profile image via the Browse button.
  • Share on Server – Tick to immediately upload the player to the server; otherwise, it will upload when first used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Removes the player from the system if required.

Venues

These are the grounds where matches take place and must be attached to a governing organisation.

  • Name – Enter the official venue name.
  • City – Enter the city or town where the venue is located.
  • Country – Select the country from the dropdown list.
  • Northernmost End – Enter the name of the northernmost end (e.g., "Pavilion End").
  • Southernmost End – Enter the name of the southernmost end (e.g., "Railway End").
  • Boundaries (Metres) – Enter the boundary lengths for North, South, East, and West, if known. These can be updated per match.
  • Club/Organisation – Select the venue's home club/organisation.
  • Location (Optional) – Enter the latitude and longitude, if known, or use the Check Coordinates function.
  • External ID – This field is inactive and can be ignored.
  • Share on Server – Tick to immediately upload the venue to the server; otherwise, it will upload when first used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Removes the venue from the system if required.

Officials

These are the individual Scorers, Umpires, Referees, or Analysts involved in a competition. They must be linked to the governing organisation.

  • Full Name – Enter the first, middle, and last names of the official. A preferred first name can also be added.
  • Scorecard Name – Auto-populated in the format "AB Player" format but can be edited. This name appears in NV Play Cricket and Match Centres.
  • Short Display Name – Auto-populated from the full name. Displayed on the Main Scoreboard Panel within NV Play Cricket and on replay screens/scoreboards.
  • Role(s) – Select the applicable roles, e.g., Umpire, Referee, Scorer, or Analyst.
  • Club/Organisation – Select the appropriate Club/Organisation.
  • Gender – Select the gender from the dropdown list.
  • External ID – This field is inactive and can be ignored.
  • Retired? – Tick to remove retired officials from selection lists.
  • Data Protection – Tick if the official permits the use of personal data (timestamped and saved on the server).
  • Date of Birth – Select via the calendar icon or enter manually (DD/MM/YYYY).
  • Email Address – Enter the official’s email.
  • Mobile Number – Enter the official’s mobile number.
  • Twitter Name – Enter the official’s Twitter (X) handle.
  • Postcode – Enter the postcode (not required for most users).
  • Profile Image – Upload a profile image via the Browse button.
  • Share on Server – Tick to immediately upload the official to the server; otherwise, it will upload when first used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Removes the official from the system if required.

Match Types

These are the standard or custom-defined match formats containing specific rules.

  • Description – Enter an appropriate name for the match type.
  • Display Name – Edit the auto-generated description, e.g., removing "Men's" or "Women's" references if indicated by team names.
  • Format – Select Pairs if applicable. Tick Countdown for a Hundred format match (standard or pairs).
  • Club/Organisation – Select the club/organisation as the match type's owner.
  • Match Days – Enter the number of days for the match type.
  • Innings per Team – Enter the number of innings per team.
  • Batters per Team – Specify the number of batters per team.
  • Players per Team – Specify the number of players per team. 
  • Over Limit – Enter the maximum overs per innings or per match.
  • Max Overs 1st Innings – Set the max overs allowed for a 4-innings match.
  • Bowler Over Limit – Define the bowler's max overs per innings or match.
  • Min Overs for Result – Set the minimum overs required for a result in a 2-innings match.
  • Overs per Day – Enter the minimum overs per day and last-hour overs for a 4-innings match.
  • Overs for New Ball – Specify the overs required before a new ball is available.
  • Consecutive Overs – Set limits per end and per bowler.
  • Double Runs/Zones – Tick Possible to enable double runs (adds an "x2" button). Tick Auto for B1s if automatic for visually impaired players.
  • Grace Period – Enter the number of balls/wickets where a batter is not dismissed.
  • Grace Period Runs – Specify runs gained by bowlers or lost by batters during the grace period.
  • Overs per Pair – For a Pairs match, enter the overs per batting pair and enable strike change if required.
  • Auto Retire Prompt – Set the ball/run limit where batters are prompted for retirement.
  • Starting Runs – Define the starting runs for each team's innings.
  • Default DLS Method and G50 – Choose the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method and set G50 (Standard 2002). G50 is necessary when the DLS Method is "Standard (2002)", setting the average score expected by the first-batting team in a first innings of a 50 overs-per-innings match.
  • Default DLS Display – Select Par Score display type: End of Over, Current Par, or End of Ball.
  • Super Overs/Batters – Enter Super Over rules, including the number of overs and allowed batters.
  • Power Plays – Enable the 10+30+10 (50-over) or 6 overs (T20) power play rule with the Use P/P checkbox, or the 10 + 5 (batting only) power play rule with the Batting P/P checkbox. 

These three Power Play functions are not available in NV Play Cricket by default. Contact support@nvplay.com to have these settings added manually.

  • Balls per Over – Set the number of balls per over and allow for extra no-balls/wides.
  • Max Balls Penalty – Set the runs penalty if the bowling team exceeds the max balls per over.
  • No Ball Value – Specify runs per no-ball, and enable rebowling.
  • No Ball (Last Over) – Define special last-over no-ball rebowling rules.
  • Wide Value – Specify runs per wide, and enable rebowling.
  • Wide (Last Over) – Define special last-over wide rebowling rules.
  • Share on Server – Tick to immediately upload the match type to the server; otherwise, it will upload when first used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Removes the match type from the system if required.
  • Inactive? – Tick to hide the match type from dropdown lists in competition, fixture, and match setup.

Competitions

These are the individual competitions that must be created to host fixtures, publish to the Match Centre, collate Competition Centre statistics, etc. They should be attached to the governing organisation of the competition.

  • Continuation Of – Select the previous season's competition to auto-populate the competition name, type, and match type. These can be modified as needed.
  • Competition Name – Enter a name for the competition, excluding the season suffix (e.g., "2024/25" will be auto-added).
  • Season – Select the required season from the dropdown list.
  • Competition Type – Choose the competition type from the dropdown list.
  • Level – Select the competition level.
  • Match Type – Select the appropriate match type, including any custom match type already created.
  • Parent Competition – Select the required parent competition (an already created competition in the same season). A parent competition can have child competitions attached, such as a One Day Competition and a Twenty20 Competition under the same main competition.
  • Group by Parent Competition – This groups all child competitions under the parent competition for Match Centre and Competition Centre purposes, including fixtures, results, and points tables.
  • Club/Organisation – Select the owner club/organisation from the dropdown list.
  • Secondary Club/Org – Select a secondary organisation if another software user needs access (typically not required).
  • External ID – Inactive, can be ignored.
  • Share on Server – Tick to immediately upload the new competition to the server and save it locally. If left unticked, the competition will be uploaded when used in a live-scored match.
  • Points Table -> Calculate – Tick to enable automatic points allocation upon match completion. The points table will be published on the Competition Centre (if licensed) and will be complete only if all matches are scored using NV Play Pro Cricket Scorer or the Cricket Scorer mobile app.
  • Ordered By – Select the criteria for ranking teams with equal points.
  • Result Points – Enter the points awarded for different match result options.
  • OIM Points – For two-innings matches reduced to one-innings due to lost time, enter the adjusted points.
  • First Innings Points – For two-innings matches, enter points for first innings outcomes.
  • Net Run Rate Bonus – For one-innings matches, enter the ratio required (typically 1.25) for awarding a bonus, and the bonus points number.
  • First Innings Bonus – Enter the maximum number of overs for awarding first innings bonus points.
  • F/I Batting Runs (or RPO if ticked) – Enter the required runs (or RPO value) for awarding batting bonus points.
  • F/I Bowling Wickets – Enter the number of wickets required for awarding bowling bonus points.
  • WASP Par Score – Enter the estimated first-innings score for a 50% win probability in One Day or T20 competitions.  Tick the Show WASP on Scoreboard/Match Centre checkbox to display WASP values on the Match Centre and the Main Scoreboard panel within PCS, and on any replay screen/scoreboard display.
  • Delete – Delete a competition if required.

Fixtures

These are the individual matches within a competition that must be created in advance for publishing on the Match Centre and scoring via File > Start Match from Fixture.

  • Club/Organisation – Select the required club/organisation.
  • Team – Select the required team.
  • Start Date – Select the fixture start date using the calendar icon or enter manually (DD/MM/YYYY).
  • Start Time – Enter the start time (HH:MM format).
  • UTC – Choose the appropriate time zone.
  • D/N – Tick if the fixture is a day/night match.
  • Competition – Select the fixture's competition.
  • Match Type – Auto-populated based on the selected competition but can be modified.
  • Venue – Select the venue.
  • Scorers, Umpires, Match Referee, Analyst – Assign officials if known.

Admin Settings:

  • Description – Enter a match description (e.g., Match 1, Round One, Grand Final, etc.).
  • Pitch No – Enter the pitch number if required.
  • Ball Type – Select the type of ball used.
  • Ball Colour – Select the ball colour.
  • WASP Par Score – Enter the WASP Par Score (can be updated on match day).
  • Show WASP on Scoreboard/Match Centre – Tick to display WASP values (Par Score and Probability of Winning) on the scoreboard and Match Centre.
  • Is Playoff – Tick if the fixture is a playoff/finals match (excludes from points table).
  • Include in Points Table – Tick to include the fixture in the points table.
  • Share on Server – Tick to immediately upload the fixture to the server and save it locally. Otherwise, the competition will be uploaded when used in a live-scored match.
  • Delete – Delete a fixture if required.

User Events

Custom user events for high-performance data coding/analysis.

  • Description – Enter the event name.
  • Show on Score Panel – Tick to add a new button to the Events panel.
  • Show in Stats Wizard – Tick to include the event in the Stats Wizard.
