The Auto Capture feature is designed for Live Scorers who want to avoid the added workload of manually clipping each ball. While manual clipping can produce cleaner, more polished clips, it can also be time-consuming, especially during high-pressure match scenarios.
Auto Capture streamlines the video capture process by recording clips automatically as balls are scored. This reduces the scorer’s workload and ensures ball clips are available for highlights, live scorecards, and post-match analysis.
Supported Use Cases
Auto Capture is supported in the following scenarios:
- A single scorer using one video input while scoring the match.
- A single scorer using 2–4 video inputs, with multi-cam settings determining which inputs are captured.
- Continuous Capture used alongside Auto Capture. This is an unusual workflow, combining recreational features with Pro-level tools and licensing.
Supported Functionality
Auto Capture settings allow you to record:
- All deliveries, or;
- Only selected events, such as Fours, Sixes, Wickets, and Milestones
Some licences limit Auto Capture to highlights only, meaning dot balls, 1s, 2s, and 3s are not captured.
Available clip durations are:
- Non-wicket deliveries: 17 seconds
- Wicket deliveries: 37 seconds (17 seconds before and 20 seconds after the Wicket button on the Scoring panel is clicked)
Enabling Auto Capture
To use the Auto Capture feature, it is important that you tick the Capture/Edit Video box at the bottom of the New Match dialogue (File > New Match) when starting a new match or opening a fixture.
When your match is open, check that both Capture/Edit Video and Auto Capture Video are selected from the Video menu.
Live Scorer Best Practice
To ensure well-timed wicket clips, you should click the Wicket button on the Scoring panel immediately when the dismissal occurs (as if you were scoring a Four or Six), even if fielder details are unknown; For example, select "Unknown" as the fielder for a catch or run out and then use Edit mode to correct this later when the fielder is identified.
The ball clip will include the delivery, dismissal, and reaction, regardless of when fielding details are added, and the score overlay will update as soon as fielder data is added via Edit mode in the above scenario.
Scoring quickly in this way also ensures that the Auto Replay, if this is enabled, also contains the key action, rather than footage after the key action.
Monitoring Auto Capture
NV Play Cricket software does not currently warn users if video is not being captured. You should therefore check that Auto Capture is functioning correctly:
- Open the Ball by Ball panel (View > Scorecard Data > Ball by Ball).
- Check the Video column to see if ball clips are being saved.
- Confirm that durations (e.g. 17s, 37s) appear after each scored delivery. If durations are missing, check the capture configuration and try restarting the video input or the NV Play Cricket software.
Planned Future Enhancements
New features and enhancements that are under active consideration include:
- The addition of warning prompts or UI indicators to alert scorers that ball clips are not being captured when licensing, video input, or configuration options indicate that they should be.
- Vision AI enhancements to automatically trim ball clips based on bowler approach and release, improving clip accuracy even further.
