This guide explains how to edit player details in the NV Play Cricket for Windows software, whether you're connected to a competition management system or using a local database.

Local Edits vs. Competition System Changes

If you're connected to a competition management system (that is, you have signed into the NV Play Cricket for Windows software using a username and password), any changes you make to player details can affect all users, including other scorers.

To keep changes local only, either click the Continue without Login button on the Login dialogue after opening the software and before editing, or make sure that the Share on Server? box is unticked before saving any player edits.

Use local edits when making permanent updates to a player's profile that don't need to sync across the system.

When and How to Edit Players

You can edit a player's details in two ways:

  • During team setup on the New Match dialogue (File > New Match), by selecting a player in the team list and then clicking the Edit button. Make the required edits and then click Save.
  • At any other time by going to Tools > Edit Database to open the Edit Database dialogue, then clicking the Players tab. Select a player from the list, make the required edits and then click Save.

If you have signed into the software, but you want the changes you make to remain local, check that the Share on Server? box is unticked.

You can use the Name field to search for players, and the Club and Team dropdown menus to filter results.

Editable Fields and Their Uses

When you have selected a player, the following fields can be used to edit or add details:

  • Full Name: The player's official first and last names (middle name is optional). Used in stats. Mandatory.
  • Preferred First: Enter a nickname or commonly used name (e.g. "Tom" instead of "Thomas") without changing the official name.
  • Retired: Tick if the player has stopped playing. They will remain in the database for stats but won't appear in future team selections.
  • Scorecard Name: Usually formatted with initials and surname. Displayed on scorecards. Mandatory.
  • Club/Organisation: The club or organisation that the player belongs to. Mandatory.
  • Short Display Name: Shown on scoreboards. Mandatory. Useful for:
    • Long names.
    • Differentiating players with the same surname.
    • Using commonly known names.
  • Gender: Helps filter and select players in relevant areas of the software.
  • Shirt Number: Must be numeric. Appears in the Fielding panel and in player dropdowns.
  • Left-Handed Batter: Important for automatically adjusting wagon wheel and fielding view orientation.
  • Bowling Type and Keeper: Useful for identification but do not affect scoring behaviour.
  • Visual Impairment: Used when scoring visually impaired match types.
